Until the 1950s, Baghdad’s vibrant Jewish community played a large role in the cultural and social life of the city. [Online until: 06.10.2018]

But then a wave of anti-Semitic violence forced almost all Iraqi Jews to flee the country. The documentary tells the story of Jewish life in Baghdad in the first half of the 20th Century through private photos and film clips. Little has been told about Jewish life in Baghdad. This very personal documentary tells the story of an Iraqi Jewish family, and one member’s recent return to Iraq to buy a house. The film presents a mosaic of Jewish life in Baghdad in the first half of the 20th century – weaving private pictures of picnics by the Tigris and parties with the royal family with archive news footage documenting the growing anti-Jewish sentiment and persecution that forced Jews into exile. The life of the Jewish community of Baghdad was shaped by the British mandate, the rise of the Nazis in Germany and the founding of the State of Israel. Even in the young state of Israel, Iraqi Jews were initially seen as Arabs and were not welcome after their escape.

  7. Mizrahi Jews lived in the Middle East for centuries, in Syria, for instance, the Jewish communities had been there for two thousand years before the last families were rescued in the recent conflicts in that country! And it was due to the Jewish Naqba that the majority had to flee and make Alyiah (go live in Israel) from the other Middle Eastern and north African lands. Some miss their homelands to this day but persecutions had escalated to such a degree that staying became life-risking, not to mention the very appropriation of their estates and wealth, leaving them totally bereft of any financial means and torn apart, plucked out from their very roots, since most of their families had settled in these lands many centuries, or even thousands of years before.
Amazing and precious historical documental footages, vielen Dank, Deutsche Welle, verteilt (und doch auch heruntergeladen)!!

  8. Not Palestine, but the British Mandate of Palestine was to be partitioned… Some Arab state supporters do think that there was a Palestinian state, and Israel invaded it
