German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas met with Iraq’s President and Prime Minister in Baghdad on Saturday, as part of a bid to de-escalate tensions between Tehran and Washington over the Iran nuclear deal.
Maas could be seen meeting with President Barham Salih and Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi as part of a four-day tour of the Middle East in which the leaders will hold talks to discuss how to preserve the nuclear deal in the face of increased hostility between the US and Iran over its implementation.
The German Foreign Minister will then head to the United Arab Emirates and Iran.
Tensions have been rising between the US and Iran in recent weeks, since Tehran announced it would partially withdraw from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), on May 8, one year after the United States withdrew and re-imposed sanctions on Iran.
